BOARD UPDATE
Date: April 23, 2020
Subject: Board Update - Long Range Facilities Plan
At the April 22, 2020 public meeting of the Board of Education, the Board announced that at this time, it will not proceed with phase two of the Long Range Facilities Plan (LRFP) Action Plan. The Board is currently engaged in a number of other initiatives, including the development of the strategic plan and a large number of seismic and capital projects. The Board will also continue to work on other strategic recommendations contained in the LRFP such as developing its 2021-2022 Five-Year Capital Plan, identifying potential new child care locations, developing business cases for additional seismic upgrade projects, and overall space planning for the district. The Board has decided to focus its resources in those areas at this time, particularly given the added complexities that have resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Phase two of the Long Range Facilities Plan Action Plan is intended to review and potentially address various issues involving secondary schools in the South Central Region, including school consolidation options. The South Central Region consists of four secondary schools (McNair, McRoberts, Palmer and Steveston-London), as well as their feeder elementary schools. As a result of the board’s decision, the district will not be considering any school consolidations at this time. The Board of Education may decide at a future board meeting to revisit phase two of the Long Range Facilities Plan. The district will continue to notify the public and staff regarding any future updates.
