Knowing the purpose gives meaning to a thought, an acitivity, a skill, etc...  Students engage in a more meaningful way if they have purpose to what they are doing.  Our ELL students (English Language Learner) are able to learn vocabulary more quickly if they have context and a personal connection to what they are learning.  Using their background knowledge to support their learning is key, and shows that we appreciate and value the student's home language.
