Our School Story

We are the GARDEN CITY WILD CATS!

Each year, teachers, principals and parents in every school in British Columbia talk about how to enhance student learning, to make the educational experience for our students the best it can be.  We look for evidence in students' conversations, in their behaviour and attitudes, and in the many ways they represent their thinking.

At Garden City, we are a community of lifelong learners who work together to nurture an environment of cooperation, thoughtful communication, and social responsibility.  Our School Matrix, “Garden City Cares” is about C-Caring, A-Accepting, R–Responsible, E–Encouraging, S-Safe. We strive to care for each other, learn and improve each day.

Mr. Yesaki, a long time staff member at Garden City School summed up who we are...

"Our story begins in Richmond, British Columbia with the children, families, and shared history of our community.  Our story develops in the classrooms of our school where we teach, learn, and think critically about our constantly evolving world and the complicated people within.  It continues in our shared spaces where we challenge each other to model personal and social responsibility while nurturing our creative and extra-curricular abilities.  Our staff are dedicated to helping develop citizens who are safe, happy, and prepared for the challenges of learning and living in a modern world while respecting the lands and people who nurtured the way for us.  Our students try their best to show their best but we understand that learning can be a challenge.  We are a community of learners engaged in lifelong learning.  Together we weave magic through the simplicity of one day, one mindful step at a time.  Our focus is on the learner but our goal is the world beyond hallways, playgrounds, and school bells.  Garden City’s school story is about our community and our world because we are you." (S. Yesaki, Jan. 30, 2023)

Working with parents, staff and students, we aim to hear all voices in order to meet students’ learning needs and support them where they are in their learning.  Planning, teaching, discussion, reflection, asking curious questions, and adjusting are part of a constant cycle that we are working with each day so that students and teachers can move forward in the learning.  Allowing for children to work in a structure where they choose the way that best shows what they are learning and have learned is becoming an important aspect in our classrooms each day.

We are continuing to work with the curriculum this year and will continue to delve into engaging students in different ways with continued Pro D, workshops, and collaboration time with each other. Finding the best way for each child to gain knowledge, make it more meaningful, and be able to go deeper with their learning.
